How to Measure SRR Correctly
Consistency creates a baseline. Baselines create early warning.
Sound Asleep
Only measure when your pet is in deep sleep—not just resting or dreaming.
Count Breaths
One breath = chest rise AND fall. Count for a full 60 seconds (or use the timer).
Stay Consistent
Measure at the same time(s) each day to see true trends, not noise.
When to Seek Urgent Care
If you think your pet is in distress, seek urgent veterinary care.
Red Flags
- Consistently elevated SRR (for many dogs, > 30 bpm while sleeping)
- Increased effort to breathe (belly breathing, noisy breathing)
- Restlessness, collapse, or inability to get comfortable
